About Us
Our Founder's Story
Literacy By the Sea was founded by Janice Kohler-Curtis, Ed.D., to address the literacy crisis around the country. Dr. Kohler-Curtis received her doctorate in reading science from Mount St. Joseph University. She is certified through the Center for Effective Reading Instruction as a Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist. Janice is a founding member of The Reading League South Carolina. She is a certified Orton-Gillingham Tutor, Instructor, and Practicum Supervisor.
Dr. Kohler-Curtis is an expert in the field of literacy with over 30 years of experience. Her career began as a special educator where she served the community and students for 20 years. Then, she acted as the Chief Academic Officer for a successful Orton-Gillingham organization and a consulting company for ten years before starting her own business.
Dr. Kohler-Curtis is passionate about bringing her 30+ years of literacy expertise to schools, districts, and organizations, helping them achieve literacy success for all students.
